The name Haven BJJ
The name of the team really shows what we’re all about:

Firstly, “Haven” refers to the harbor. Our team’s roots are in Santos, Brazil. Both Santos and Rotterdam are major port cities. Both cities value hard work. With Haven BJJ, we want to pay tribute to the team’s roots and emphasize the importance of hard work.

Secondly, “Haven” refers to a safe place. We aim to provide a place where everyone can learn jiu-jitsu in a safe environment, regardless of their current fitness or experience level.

How do we do that?

We have 3 core values that guide everything we do in the gym:

  1. Hard work > We don’t believe in short cuts. We expect everyone in the team to work hard: the coaches, the desk employees, the pro athletes and the regular members. Our training sessions are designed not be easy. They’re made to be both physically and mentally challenging, without being overwhelming.
  2. Constant improvement > We’re constantly looking to improve. That means we’ll experiment with new training methods, listen to feedback of the members and we’re not afraid to make mistakes. We want our members to have the same mindset.
  3. Team work > Even though jiu jitsu is an individual sport, your training is done with the team. We’re always looking to make everyone in the room better. And the better the room, the better the individual athletes.

Next to our core values, there are 3 core actions we’re constantly pursuing:
Safe: We do our best to create an environment where everyone feels safe:
A safe Haven. We have a strict, as the All Blacks say it, “No Dickheads” policy and want all our members to feel at home.
Clean: We clean our mats multiple times per day and we expect everyone that trains with us to show up smelling good in a freshly washed gi or rashguard.
Friendly: Our goal is not to just teach jiu jitsu, but also to built a community. We do that by putting an emphasis on being friendly to everyone in the gym.
