In BJJ, you can distinguish between training goals and competitive goals:
Training goals:
– How often will you train per week?
– Which positions will you work on? (barbell strategy*)
– What will you physically improve outside the mat? (e.g., flexibility, strength, cardio, diet)
– What will you mentally improve outside the mat? (discipline, competitive mentality, studying matches)
Competitive goals:
– Which competitions do you want to participate in?
– What results do you want to achieve?
Barbell Strategy
When choosing the positions you want to work on, you can apply the so-called barbell strategy. It originates from the financial world, conceived by Nassim Taleb, but can also be well translated to BJJ.
The idea? Focus on the extremes:
3 strong positions: Work on what you already do well and make it even better.
3 weak positions: Work on the positions you struggle with the most.
With the barbell strategy, you avoid the middle of the barbell when setting your goals. So positions where you are reasonably good but not great. Through our curriculum, you will work on all important positions anyway. So focus your own study and free training on the extremes of the barbell.
