Ringworm: Recognize and stop
Ringworm is one of the most common skin infections in grappling and BJJ. It is an itchy fungus that creates circular spots on the skin (not a real worm). It can easily spread through skin-to-skin contact.
The good news: ringworm is not life-threatening and easy to treat. Here are the 5 most important tips:
1. Do not train if you have ringworm.
If you see anything suspicious on your skin, do not come to training and let your coach know.
2. Shower immediately after training
Do not go home first, but shower with soap as soon as possible after training!
3. Cover yourself
Wear a long rash guard and spats under your shorts to avoid skin-to-skin contact as much as possible. Of course, wear a clean set of clothes for every training.
4. Still have ringworm? Apply cream!
You can get antifungal cream, such as miconazole nitrate, at any drugstore without a prescription. If the ringworm persists, make an appointment with your doctor.
