Alwin van Laar made the switch from judo to an MMA gym a long time ago, where he was introduced to grappling. It quickly became his favorite part of the training. That interest led him to search for a gym that focused solely on grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — and that’s where his BJJ journey truly began.
As a black belt at Haven BJJ Rotterdam, Alwin is one of the most decorated athletes of the gym, with over ten gold medals at international IBJJF tournaments. His judo background gives him a unique technical foundation that he combines with a pressure-based ground game and specializations in arm locks and the Peruvian necktie.
On Tuesday evenings, Alwin always integrates judo throws into his training. His focus as a coach is on bridging the gap between judo and BJJ by teaching throws that can also be effectively applied in no-gi situations. His students appreciate the challenge and the progress they make in standing work.
